Mission Statement

The Department of Money and Macroeconomics aims to strengthen its position as one of the premier research centers in Europe for research in macroeconomics, with an emphasis on empirical and theoretical questions related to monetary policy and financial markets. In pursuing this goal, members of the Department will continue to work in close cooperation with the Center for Financial Studies, the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, and other leading national and international institutions.

The goal of the Department's contribution to the Ph.D. programs of the Graduate School of Economics, Finance, and Management (GSEFM) is to help produce outstanding economists capable of taking leading positions in academia or serving as experts in international institutions, government or the private sector. The Department also endeavors to offer a teaching curriculum at the bachelor and master level that combines analytical rigor with practical relevance, enabling students to analyze macroeconomic policy questions in many professional environments.

Global Outlook: The Department’s faculty members have extensive teaching and research experience through previous positions at some of the top universities and monetary policy institutions in Europe and the United States.

Contribution to Research Networks and Policy Advice: Faculty members are involved in key international research networks (including those of the Center for Financial Studies), and their expertise is regularly called upon by a number of important institutions (including the Bank of International Settlements, Deutsche Bundesbank, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve Board, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank).

Influential Publications: Faculty members in the past years have published in prestigious journals such as American Economic Review, Econometric Theory, Economic Journal, International Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, and Review of Economics and Statistics.

Breaking New Ground in Graduate Education: In addition to actively contributing to the Bachelor program of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Goethe University, members of the Department’s faculty are directing ground-breaking programs such as the Master in Money and Finance as well as the Master in Quantitative Economics and the Ph.D. in Economics Programs of the Graduate School of Economics, Finance, and Management.
